In the latest episode of the Coastal Currents Podcast presented by DeSatnick Real Estate, we had the pleasure to sit down with a true Cape May legend—Mark Kulkowitz, the esteemed owner of The Mad Batter, Carroll Villa Hotel, and the newly opened Cricket Club. Known for its vibrant history and warm, welcoming atmosphere, The Mad Batter has become an iconic staple in Cape May, thanks in no small part to Mark and his family's dedication.
Mark Kulkowitz shared a fascinating story about how his father acquired The Mad Batter and Carroll Villa Hotel, debunking the myth that it was won in a poker game. The original owners, were quintessential 70s hippies who created a colorful, quirky atmosphere in their 31-room hotel. Mark’s father, drawn to Cape May's charm after visiting friends, saw the potential for a community center where arts, music, and people could come together. His vision laid the foundation for what The Mad Batter would become—a place where vibrant art and a welcoming community spirit thrive.
Mark’s personal journey is just as colorful as the hotel’s walls. A self-described "quintessential hippie," he initially planned to teach English and history in Australia. However, after a transformative biking trip across Europe and a chance reconnection with a high school friend stationed in Munich, Mark ended up joining the U.S. Army. His path from Woodstock attendee to military service was a stark contrast, but it eventually led him back to Cape May, where he started working at the Mad Batter in 1979..
At the heart of The Mad Batter's enduring appeal is its community spirit. Mark’s father instilled a philosophy of recognizing and valuing every guest—saying hello, thanking them, and making them feel seen. This tradition has carried on, becoming a hallmark of the Kulkowitz family’s approach to hospitality. Mark, his wife Pam, and their children have continued to foster this warm atmosphere, making every visitor feel like part of the family.
Beyond food and lodging, The Mad Batter has been a vibrant cultural hub for Cape May. It regularly hosts art shows, live music, and open mic nights, providing a platform for local talent and bringing together the community in celebration of the arts. Mark proudly notes that over the years, he’s greeted more than a million guests, often sharing a laugh or a joke, creating lasting memories for visitors of all ages.
Reflecting on Cape May's evolution, Mark noted that it was once known as a "drinking town with a Victorian problem." Over the years, however, The Mad Batter has played a pivotal role in shifting the town’s focus towards family-friendly activities and cultural enrichment. Mark and his family continue to uphold the values of community and connection, ensuring that every guest feels like they’re coming home when they step into The Mad Batter.
Mark’s stories are a testament to the impact of personal touch and genuine hospitality. Whether it's a first date at The Mad Batter or a family tradition of visiting the restaurant, Mark and his family have created a space where memories are made and revisited year after year. The Kulkowitz family's commitment to excellence and community has cemented The Mad Batter's place as a beloved Cape May institution.
